The Cup of Elijah

As the people waited for the intercessor promised by Moses, the prophet Malachi issued a declaration that the Messiah's appearance would be preceded by a reincarnation of the prophet Elijah:

"Know that I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before my day comes, that great and terrible day. He shall turn the hearts of fathers towards their children and the hearts of children towards their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a curse." (Malachi 3:23-24).

This tradition became very popular among the Jewish people and soon became institutionalized in the celebration of the Passover Seder. An empty cup was always included on the Passover dinner table in case he should appear while they were eating. It is still there, still waiting.

Jesus informed His disciples that Elijah appeared in the person of John the Baptist. Even so, the expectation of the Jews will also be fulfilled. Just before Jesus Christ appears a second time, another figure from heaven will precede Him, this time one even more august than Elijah, Michael the Archangel.
