The word 'millenium' relates to a thousand years. The relationship between this term and Jesus Christ was revealed in a quotation in the Book of Revelation, which stated that Jesus would rule the world for a thousand years after the beast had been locked up in a prison in the abyss by Michael the Archangel.
"Then I saw an angel come down from heaven with thekey of the Abyss in his hand and an enormous chain. He overpowered the dragon, that primeval serpent which is the devil and Satan, and chained him up for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and shut the entrance and sealed it over him, to make sure he would not deceive the nations again until the thousand years had passed. At the end of that time he must be released, but only for a short while." (Rv.20:1-3).
"Then I saw some thrones, and I saw those who are given the power to be judges take their seats on them. I saw the souls of all who had been beheaded for having witnessed for Jesus and for having preached God's word, and those who refused to worship the beast or his statue and would not have the brand-mark on their foreheads or hands; they came to life, and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. this is the first resurrection; the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were over. Happy and blessed are those who share in the first resurrection; the second death cannot affect them but they will be priests of God and of Christ and regn with him for a thousand years." (Rv.20:4-6).
The term 'millenium' relates to this scripture; it applies to the kingdom of God being manifested on the earth. Many modern visionaries insist that this cannot happen until Jesus physically returns.
More likely, the manifestation of God's kingdom on earth applies to the rule of Christianity here, the almost 2000-year period when God's cup has been offered liberally to all the nations. During this era the earth has witnessed a most incredible conversion. The prince of this world has been helpless to prevent the ministry of Christ from taking control of the earth and sweeping across the globe, converting to God one third of its inhabitants.
Satan's helplessness to stop Christ's march around the world indicates that he has been made powerless by God. That condition of weakness in his own domicle almost certainly relates to his incarceration. God has restricted his power and movement. More than that, the Book of Revelation indicates that once the millenium comes to an end, Satan will regain his power (be released from his prison) and return to take control of the earth once again. (Rv.20:7-10).
The signs of his return will include a militarization of the globe (scripture stating that he will mobilize the world for war). Twice in this century we have witnessed a level of combat has never happened before in the history of the human race, global war. That, in tandem with a collapsing morality, crescendoing violence and a disintegration of world belief in Christ raises the possibility of a newly invigorated Satan returning to mount a throne he had long ago relinquished to the servants of Christ.
The fact that Christ's current reign on earth has lasted almost 2000 years instead of one thousand does not argue against a present time millenium. Prophecy shows that God has almost doubled the time of His mercy on earth. That is in keeping with His commandment to us that we should do twice what we are asked.
Moreover, there is an important reason why the Holy Spirit has used the term millenium (thousand years) in discussing Christ's reign in scriptural prophecy. Using a quotation from the Psalms reiterated by Peter, it combines the 'light' that emanates from Christian preaching with the Hebrew 'Day of Atonement'.
